Quick answer
The Public Provident Fund pays 7.1% a year (October–December 2026 quarter), compounded annually, over a 15-year term, and the interest and maturity amount are tax-free. Depositing the maximum ₹1.5 lakh every year before 5 April builds ₹22.5 lakh of deposits into about ₹40.68 lakh at maturity.
How PPF interest works
Interest is calculated every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month, and credited once a year on 31 March. That is why depositing before 5 April — or before the 5th of any month — earns the most interest.
The rate is set by the government every quarter. It has been 7.1% for many consecutive quarters, but it can change, and a change applies to your whole balance from that quarter onwards.
Rules you need to know
- Deposit at least ₹500 and at most ₹1.5 lakh in a financial year (the limit covers your own account and any account you hold for a minor).
- The account matures after 15 full financial years and can be extended in blocks of 5 years, with or without new deposits.
- Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th financial year; loans against the balance from the 3rd to the 6th year.
- Deposits qualify for Section 80C under the old tax regime; interest and maturity are tax-free under both regimes (EEE).
- One PPF account per person; NRIs cannot open a new account.

Frequently asked questions
What is the PPF interest rate now?
7.1% a year for the October–December 2026 quarter. The government reviews small savings rates every quarter.
How much will ₹1.5 lakh a year in PPF become in 15 years?
About ₹40.68 lakh at 7.1%, if deposited before 5 April each year. You deposit ₹22.5 lakh and earn about ₹18.18 lakh of tax-free interest.
Is PPF interest taxable?
No. PPF has EEE status: deposits qualify for 80C (old regime), and interest and maturity are tax-free.
Can I extend PPF after 15 years?
Yes, in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits. To keep depositing you must apply for the extension within a year of maturity.
When can I withdraw from PPF?
Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th financial year, once a year, up to a limit linked to your balance four years earlier. Full withdrawal is at maturity.
What is the best date to deposit in PPF?
Before 5 April for a yearly deposit, or before the 5th of the month for monthly deposits, so the money earns interest for that month.
