Quick answer

Sales tax is set by each state, and most counties and cities add their own rate on top. State rates in 2026 range from 0% in Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon to 7.25% in California. A $100 purchase in a place with a combined 8.25% rate costs $108.25; to find the pre-tax price from a receipt total, divide by 1.0825.

How sales tax is calculated

Sales tax = price ร— combined rate, where the combined rate is the state rate plus any county, city and special-district rates. The total you pay is price + tax.

To work backwards from a total that already includes tax, divide by (1 + combined rate). On a $108.25 receipt at 8.25%, the pre-tax price is $108.25 รท 1.0825 = $100.

What is and is not taxed

  • Many states exempt groceries or tax them at a lower rate; others tax them in full.
  • Prescription drugs are exempt almost everywhere; clothing is exempt in a few states (for example Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Minnesota for most items).
  • Services are taxed in some states and not in others.
  • Online purchases are taxed based on where the item is delivered.
  • Alaska has no state sales tax but many Alaskan cities levy local sales tax.

Sales tax and your federal return

If you itemize deductions, you can deduct either state income tax or state and local sales tax on Schedule A, within the state and local tax (SALT) cap. People in states with no income tax often choose sales tax. Most taxpayers take the standard deduction instead, in which case sales tax is not deductible.
